Currently Cortegana’s economy is based on the industrial and service sectors, not forgetting agriculture. The principal industry is meat, with important pork processing and factories specialising in hams, sausages and other pork products.

The cork industry is also important and there are two iron forging workshops, which mostly produce bridles and harness.

Agriculture concentrates on traditional orchards and vegetable production along with olives, holm oaks and chestnuts. Animal husbandry is predominantly pigs although latterly there has been a move towards cattle, sheep and goats.

In the last few years tourism has proved to be an important economic resource, with a significant addition to the profits for Cortegana establishments. Given certain qualities of climate, terrain… the area would seem to be perfect for active outdoor tourism, with special attraction for walkers and hikers, mountain bikers, horse riders…
